New kid on the block… my first week as an intern

Hello everyone!

This week I joined the real world and completed my first week of internship. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. Reaching the end of my degree, I was confident in the knowledge and skills I had gained but not in my ability to apply them in a professional context without the safety net of my peers and tutors.

As a result of a successful interview, from the 23rd of February every Tuesday I would be Magenta’s new kid on the block. My nerves were swiftly put at ease as I was introduced to the team. With only a handful of team members I got to know everyone I’d be working within a matter of seven introductions.

Once the quick office tour was complete I was put to work straight away, my brief? Sourcing media coverage in newspapers of one of Magenta’s clients. The task required my attention to detail to look for any mention of the client like looking for Where’s Wally. This task gave me an insight and even an appreciation for the dedication and commitment Magenta shows its clients which made me all the more excited to be a part of the team.

After a couple of hours it was time for my next task. I was asked to research and compose some draft Facebook posts for one of Magenta’s clients. The types of posts I was asked to come up with were broad and I was given a lot of room to be creative. Previous assignments and class work gave me the confidence to complete this task and at one point I even thought to myself “Wow, I actually know what I’m doing.” This thought was even more validated when I showed my work to one of my superiors and they told me what a good job I had done.

It was from then on my confidence was boosted and my choice of career reaffirmed as I thought to myself, I could actually do this for the rest of my life.

My last task for the day was to research the work of one more of Magenta’s clients, a world famous photographer. My final task entailed me to come up with a list of ideas for Instagram posts for this client. I was asked to focus around Oscar winner’s he had shot or celebrities with birthdays coming up in the month of March. With my newfound confidence I covered what was asked of me and extended on finding other anniversaries to commemorate which lead to receiving more praise and more confidence in myself.  A few days after my first day I looked on the Instagram page of this client and was ecstatic and proud of myself to see some of the ideas I had come up posted on their account!

I’m so excited to work with such a creative and collaborative team like Magenta, and I hope everyone else enjoys their placements just as much as me. Bring on week 2!

Until next time,

Jordaine
