Step Up From Your Comfort Zone

Dear all,

Hi, how is everyone. I read most of your blogs. Where did you guys intern and do in your work place. It is a good to learnt new experience right especially how PR work in different situation. It was interesting if you had passion for it. I won’t lie. Public Relation is though even most of the people who are not familiar have difficulty to understand what PR is really about and how it influences & affecting in an organization. Sorry for the late post.

Here I want to start off with introducing myself. My name is Melanie Alexandria Lawrence. I am one of Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, majoring in Public Relations students in Curtin University Sarawak. Before I describe how my internship were, I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks those of you who have been helping me out and giving tips on how to do well in my internship.
I am an intern in Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah known as Shangri-La TAH. I am also the second Curtin student who intern in this amazing resort. Well, there is also a lot to talk about this resort. I am grateful and appreciate that I could learn as much as I can, how this internship experience had been helping my ability and improve in my journey to the working life reality. I would say I had a VERY big fear to intern in this 5 star hotel at first and I never thought I could even make it. But here I am. First day, I walk into HR department and report myself as an intern there. The HR department team is quite friendly. I’m quite nervous to be alone to go through this internship. But as my motivator says

“No matter where you are on your journey, that’s exactly where you need to be. The next road is always ahead.”

-Oprah Winfrey

I met new friends. We were giving short introduction by Mr. Peter Dundang, Assistant Training Manager. He also give us some tips what we can and can’t do as a staff here although it was only temporarily. And the most interesting part of my half-day orientation was the background story of Shangri-La. Going to the point, before lunch on my first day of work, Mr. Peter bring us for a tour around the resort. It is my very first time to take walk in such a big property with the other interns, experiencing this view & relaxing environment. No wonder there are so many visitor and attention drag to this well-known resort ground and one of the top hotel in Kota Kinabalu. As the time passed very fast, Mr Peter sends each one of the trainees to our respective department. As for me, I was handed directly to Communication Department. There I met Daphne (Direction of Communication’s assistant), Ketty (Graphic Designer) & Michelle (Social Media Officer). During that time, Daphne informed early and apologize that the DOC is not around for the first two days.

So in the meantime, Daphne guided and asked me to read the Communication Manuel book. I read thru all the necessary information that communication officer should do. I can’t believe myself to be surrounded by such amazing colleagues from other department despite from what position they are in, they stay humble and respect each other on what they can do the best contributing for this resort. That is when I tell myself that I should cherish every moment of my internship journey and use the time wisely and be helpful as much as can in my short period of doing this.

I will soon mention what did I do during my internship in my next post. Stay tuned.
