Confidence Booster!

Hi everyone,

As my internship at Momentum Forum Events progresses, I have been working closely with my supervisor which has enabled me to see various aspects of PR practices and communication set in motion. Communication work for Momentum is never ending, whether it is curating responses to email inquiries or follow ups, sending people media kits and information regarding events or being able to listen in on phone calls.

Using and sorting through the companies various email accounts has been overwhelming for me, because I am someone who has to always organise and have all my notifications checked and up to date. But with a business that is busy in this industry, it seems almost impossible. Receiving constant emails, phone calls and social media notifications in the lead up to events and campaigns, it’s ongoing. As you are responding to one notification, another comes through! I am starting to get used to it though, keeping up with the constant influx and have realised that it is a good thing! It also tests my ability to be versatile and communicate information on varying events and topics.

Another practice that brought me back to the Public Relations Techniques unit’s website creation assignment, was helping the team decide the page layout, updates and banner changes for this year’s Perth Pet Expo website. I remembered the various ways a company should ideally set out their website and the order of images and headings in to improve the usability and appeal to clients. It was great to be able to use this knowledge and I found myself pleasantly surprised when my opinions and input has been valued or considered in decisions such as this.

Another aspect that has been awesome about the placement is, with our generation being so tech savvy and through personal use as well as learning in PR units (such as media relations and PR Principles) at university, we are well equip with using and understanding social media. I have had my supervisor asking for my assistance with certain areas on social media and using technology. This has been great because I have realised, I actually have confidence in using this and have been able to answer some questions and teach her something, instead of purely always being the one asking! From speaking to other students, it sounds like many of us have been able to utilize our skills and capabilities in social media.

Also after the past two years of writing countless media releases and practicing media kits, it’s encouraging to see how often they are used and produced in a real-life company and why they are so important. I now understand why we had to learn every crucial correct detail for writing and formatting them.

Thanks for reading, hope you’re having an enjoyable semester!

Hi Bianca,

It's great to see that you were able to draw on some of your skills from uni and utilise them in your internship! I find it can be really rewarding and comforting, particularly due to the familiarity of the task. Working in such a busy and often competitive industry, it's important to remain flexible yet focused on the task at hand. It seems that you are quickly gaining the hang of this with the ability to switch between clients and various topics.

I hope your confidence continues to grow and you are able to draw upon more similarities and capabilities from our PR classes in your future work as a PR practitioner.

All the best,

Clare
