The Power of Social Media

During our studies we’ve learnt much about the power of social media and the enormous potential the platform has in fostering fantastic two-way communication but through my placement I’ve discovered how big a role social media actually plays in public relations.

My placement invests a lot of time and effort into managing the social media aspects for its clients and they identify the potentials it holds to see great results for their clients.
One of the services my placement offers is ambassador management. Depending on the type of client and the goals of the client are factors that come into consideration when deciding on an appropriate brand ambassador. A task I was asked to assist with was adding to a list of potential ambassador for one of Magenta’s clients. The selection criterion was quiet simple;

‘An Australian lifestyle, fitness, food, or food stylists accounts with over 100,000 followers on Instagram or likes on Facebook’

This brought me back to our Media Relations unit where we learnt about the power and influence successful bloggers can have with their followings. We learn that using these platforms can mean a greater customer reach for clients and largely successful campaigns.
The task assigned to me really opened my eyes to the extent social media has changed traditional public relations techniques through its evolution.

Social media monitoring is also a big part of Magenta, with constant monitoring of their clients following to reach their target numbers. A large portion of my practical experience comes down to helping with social media post ideas again bringing me back to my studies during PR Techniques. The posts are carefully written and scheduled to achieve the best result whether it be on Facebook or Instagram

I am enjoying constantly learning about how the team at my placement employ social media in their campaigns and day-to-day communication for their clients and look forward to seeing further ways they use this platform to achieve success.

I hope everyone is enjoying his or her placements as much as I am!

Hi Jordaine,

Your post rose interesting points about the use of social media and was very enjoyable to read. Outlined in your blog was the knowledge you acquired through PR Techniques and Media Relations about the power of social media and the techniques required to convey your message through social media. However my question would be has your real world experience with social media challenged any learning outcomes?

Thank you
Monique

Hi Jordaine,

I found this blog post interesting as like you said we've discussed the importance of understanding and controlling social media to attain a sustainable competitive advantage and I find it extremely interesting that this learning was put in to place at your internship.

Similar to Monique's comment I think it would be interesting to know how you ended up sourcing this individual through social media as I would love to know what search criteria (besides the given characteristics) you used to find this particular individual.

Glad you're enjoying your time at Magenta.

Regards,
Georgia
