Tips and trickes of the trade

I’m halfway through my internship and along with my everyday duties at Devahasdin I have learnt some valuable lessons regarding the importance of establishing positive relationships with clients and journalist.

As Devahadsin is a prominent boutique PR agency communication is key in their success with both clients and relevant media. Throughout my role I have assisted with pitching story ideas on behalf of clients and in doing so found that specific techniques assisted in the communication process between all groups involved in the process.  I picked up various tips and tricks from employees at the company that have assisted in establishing positive relationships with clients, editors and journalists.

I have summarised these tips to establish three ruling guidelines when interacting in a professional PR environment. I believe these pointers have assisted in enhancing my communication skills throughout my time at Devahasdin.

1.     The importance of being attentive and specific.

Working in a professional environment has opened my eyes to the reality of the saying “Time is money”. Providing succinct and straightforward information to the individual is necessary when communicating ideas or issues. Both clients and journalists have minimal time to analyse and discuss proceedings in detail.

2.     Be helpful and available at all times.

Journalists and clients consider you to be the middle point of communication. In the midst of deadlines and events you must be available to go out of your way to provide information or help. Transparent and reliable communication is necessary in order to best meet the clients’ need and correspond effectively with journalists.

3.     Get to know the individual your doing business with.

This point I found to be the most integral out of all due to the close relationships that are formed throughout ones professional career. After working alongside journalists for years many of my colleagues at Devahasdin have formed relationships with journalists and know how they like to correspond and what stories would interest them the most. This establishes a strong working relationship and allows for a streamline-working environment where communication with individuals outside of the core business is more efficient and personable.

Regardless of my profession in the near future I believe these pointers will be invaluable throughout my career.  These tips have definitely assisted me in this particular role and given insight in to the skills required when communicating so regularly with an array of groups.

Hope you’re all enjoying your internship as much as I am.

Regards,
Georgia
