Last week Garden City launched their 2016 Autumn
Winter fashion event and I was lucky enough to be a part of the team who put on
the incredible show. The show was so seamlessly put together with great
attention to detail. I know this because from the early days of my internship,
the team at my placement including myself have been putting every little piece
together.
From the rugs on the ground, to the thread on the
walls even the event’s title ‘Weave through Winter’ I was lucky enough to have
my input and take responsibility for these tasks. This year my placement was
able to secure (and who I got to meet and get a photo with!), Australian
fashion icon Rachael Finch as the event’s host and ambassador. Garden City’s
AW16 show was a day full of firsts.
As soon as I arrived to event last Thursday I hit the
ground running! My first task, which continued throughout the event, was
organising the harpist. I was responsible for positioning her in the shopping
centre and making sure her equipment was always put away or there when she
needed. What may seem like a small not so important task, I took this
responsibility quiet seriously. I want my team to know that while I had never
worked at an event like this, I was capable of fulfilling tasks without
guidance or supervision.
As the event was based around fashion there were of
course fashion shows. I was required to dress several models, which again was a
first for me! I never would have though getting dressed could be so stressful!
Again whilst under no supervision I still took this task very seriously to prove
I was capable of the tasks assigned to me.
Through the day I was assigned smaller tasks.
Supervising the stage, transporting gift bags and organising little details
needed for smaller ‘attention to detail’ requirements such as picking the
‘perfect velvet burgundy nail polish.’
The event was a success and to best of my knowledge
went off without a hitch. My first event experience has had a profound effect
on me to the extent that I’m now considering pursuing a career in events
management. The hard work of weeks of meticulous planning to see it all come
together was such an ecstatic feeling combined with the adrenaline rush of
thinking on your (very sore) feet was enough to sell me a career in the events
AND public relations industry.

Sounds like you had an incredible day at the event and all your forward planning and attention to detail really paid off! I myself got to experience what event day is like and can agree that it's such a fabulous feeling to have everything come together so effortlessly after all the teams hard work paying off.

Being a part of Garden City's Autumn Winter Fashion show sounds so exciting! Good on you for taking such a hands on approach to your tasks set for you, I'm sure it was a great display of your work ethic and your hard effort would have significantly impacted the success and outcome of the event. Being an intern at an events company myself, I can fully appreciate how important it is for everyone in your team to step up to their task and give it their all, so that the event can run successfully and smoothly.
I'm glad your hard work paid off and you were able to enjoy the event's success, as well as prove to your supervisor what a reliable and independent team worker you are. Congratulations!
