Realisations..

Hi guys,

I hope everyone is going well with their internships!
It's nearing the end of mine (I can't believe how fast it has gone) and I've come to two realisations.

1) Setting goals for yourself help!
At the beginning of my placement, I set myself an achievable goal of being able to improve my writing skills because I know how important this is in the world of PR.
To achieve this goal, I asked my co-ordinator to set me specific writing tasks where I can gain valuable feedback. Having set myself this goal, it's given me a sense of direction for my internship as well as something incredibly valuable I can take away from the whole experience.

2) Ask questions!
This is important, super important.
During my placement I'd been given various tasks to complete and sometimes I was emailed some tasks to do at home. To be honest, some of them stumped me and at first I was so hesitant to seek further clarification. But if you don't ask, you'll never know...
I honestly can't stress this point enough because if I had never of asked questions, I wouldn't know what I know now!

For those who read my last blog, I discussed the use of 'MailChimp' - a database where client information is kept. In the same blog I told you about another task I was working on which was sourcing Journalists from different newspaper companies in the community.
I was thinking to myself.. why isn't there a database for this information.

So I've come up with my first recommendation for my final report!
Create a portfolio for media contacts.

This is imperative for any PR firm, not just in the not-for-profit sector - but I shall discuss this further in my report!

Anyways, thats a wrap for today! I just really wanted to share my realisations because I think we can all benefit from them :)

Hey Helen,

Great posts! This one in particular really resonated with me as I feel as though we came to similar realisations at the end of our internships. I realized that when it came to executing my tasks, I performed them much better when I asked the correct questions and had a clear sense of direction. I guess it helps to know what exactly is required of you.

I hope you had a great time interning.

Cheers,

Hi Helen,

I agree with you on all these aspects, as I found this to be very relevant to my own internship experience. I was told recently by a tutor in one of my units to never throw away knowledge, even if it's something small, it'll come to use one day either sooner or later, which relates as to why we should all keep portfolios as mentioned by yourself.

Enjoyed this post.

Thanks,
