The importance of monitoring social media

Hi Everyone,

I recently found through my internship social media presence is becoming a more crucial aspect when it comes to a company's reputation. It can play a large role within their communication channel especially for large, well established company's. Social media is the biggest free market research tool to date, and is now known as digital marketing machines
. It aims to trigger a response and stimulate specific emotions towards focus groups, and also allows for data to be captured with it comes to different behaviours and attitudes of the specific social groups. Organisation's must know what is appropriate and what is not when posting content on social media networks.

Through my internship I found that online presence was an important aspect of developing a brand and a company's reputation. The adoption a monitoring software that is available daily is able to open opportunities for a company and/or consultants to follow trends, create a meaning discussion and reaction from publics that is relevant and trigger emotions from the discussions. The adoption of a monitoring system can also enable a fast reaction if issues and a crisis arises.

Online presence may also at times be hard to maintain and keep up with, especially if a brand or company has a large following basis. We see celebrities creating a brand and name for themselves through various social media platforms, and without getting specific, it is generally evident through their online media presence and the way the public perceives it creates speculations on a daily basis. This is the same way a company or organisations brand can be influenced by how they are represented online. An example of how world events and organisations involved in these events is evident in most recent times when we saw in the media how a young boy climbed into a gorilla's zoo enclosure in the US which lead to the death of an endangered species. This sparked mass amounts of online presence criticizing all people involved in the incident, it was also evident that people who have smart phones these days (which is almost everyone) can capture footage and sell it to the media and post it online for the world to see, and goes to show how news really does travel fast and everyone can be included in the front row, with a view.

Knowing how to respond to critics online, and holding an online presence that is portrayed as true, transparent and positive in the public eye can bring about a positive and well establish brand reputation.

Within my internship I learnt that being on par with trends and discussions can bring success to a company or brand in many ways and the benefit of it being a free marketing tool is a reflected bonus.

Hello Ana,
I cannot agree more with what you said about social media!
Also, one of the reasons social media is important is because of the highly customizable nature of social media ads. Facebook ads, for example, allow you to target users by things like location, education level, industry and even purchase history and the pages they’ve liked. You also have to the option to install a Facebook pixel on your site and use it to re target the users who visit you — these people are far more likely to convert into solid leads and sales!

Hey Ana,

Prior to your blog, I would agree that we are being exposed to truths more and more, whether factual information, distorted ones, propaganda, news and so much more while we may be continents apart. As compared to broadcast news or published information on traditional media such as television or newspaper, before we would have access to the information, and it was like facts, and we would soon get over it. For instance, terrific events such as war, bombings and what not, were only felt and forgotten soon when other information would take the lead. While social media offers the opportunity to wholly take part in major events, like the Paris attacks – Charlie Hebdo, how many people around the world had the choice to change their Facebook profile picture to the flag of France to support the social movement for freedom of expression, it is also important on the other hand to monitor social media. While you talk in a business perspective, my commentary here is shaped in a media coverage dimension, where strategies when using social media should be implemented to ensure that good public relations is spread.

Good one!

Cheers,
