Sunflowers, photo shoots and stock exchange

Hi Everyone!
How are you all?

For a small company there is always a lot going on here at CSPR.
For example although my project is with the Wine & Truffle Co and Mundaring Truffle Festival I have also been involved in projects for Therapy focus and the John Curtin Leadership Academy.
These other projects have had exciting developments over the last few months.

Therapy Focus is a non-for-profit company that works to help children with disabilities. They have recently launched a state-wide event to raise awareness of the cause and the work they do with needy kids all around WA. The event is called the Symphony of Sunflowers and was launched at garden week at Perry Lakes reserve at the end of April.

I did a little bit of work on the preparation for this event, including media invitations, contact with Therapy Focus representatives, organising and arranging bunches of sunflowers for display, passing out flyers on the day and speaking to lots of the general public about the event (which meant knowing all the details!!).

Being involved in this event has taught me the importance of preparation. If you’re well prepared and plan everything to be ready for your event you should end up with almost nothing to do on the day!

This has been a really valuable experience.

How much do you all know about photo shoots? It’s just point and shoot right? You just strike a series of silly poses right? That’s what I thought too but let me tell you that it’s NOTHING like what you have seen in America’s Next Top Model!

Early one morning I went with my supervisor to what I was told was a photo shoot. I had no idea where we were going, but we headed into the city centre and took the elevator up to the 23rd floor of the Perth Stock Exchange Building.
We ended up standing smack bang in the middle of the working floor of a company called Patterson’s Security. While I claim to know absolutely nothing about stocks and shares I must admit the sight was impressive.
There were desks everywhere and a view out of the 180 degree window to DIE for! Left to right uninterrupted view of Swan River and the city foreshore on a glorious sunny day – it really was fantastic, and coincidentally a perfect backdrop for our photos.
A brief had been given to the two stars of the photos as well as the photographer and one was kept by my supervisor Christine to refer to if necessary. Everything has to be planned but also very flexible – if it’s not working adjust it.
Thanks to the super expertise of our seasoned (and award winning) photographer the subjects were comfortable and we got a range of really great shots.
So if you are ever involved in a photo shoot make sure you know what you want, who will be in it, what’s in the background, do you want props, natural or posed, indoors or outdoors, alternatives if the weather goes bad.
There are so many things to consider! Basically it all rolls into one thing what kind of picture is going to deliver your message most effectively.
Stay tuned.
Thanks guys

Hi Rachel, sounds like you've been very busy!

From what I've learned from my own work placement, preparation, as you have pointed out is absolute key to a successful event/launch. Though from some experiences of my own sometimes no amount of preparation can control the unexpected! You just do what you can and move on.

I haven't had the opportunity to witness a photo shoot so it was great to read about your experience here! It would have never occurred to me to think about poses, backdrops or even things like weather!

A picture supposedly tells a thousand words so one must think about those types of things to get it right...

Hey Rachel,

Wow! That photo shoot sounded amazing, evidently all that we get taught in PR Technqiues is true. The shoot sounded really well planned and excuted, it must have been really interesting seeing all the effort that goes into the preparation of a shoot. At my placement it was more a case of take a fancy camera and point and shoot hoping you have the camera on the correct setting!

The therapy focus day sounded really interesting, you defintely have been lucky with your placement enabling you to see more of the 'fun' side of PR through events, sounds like lots of fun!

I hope the rest of your placement went well and that the truffle festival is/was a success.

Cheers,

Camilla

Hi Racheal,

Sounds like you are getting a wide range of experience in Pr. I am working for St John of God Murdoch and have been sent out on assignment to attend a photo shoot with a photographer who works for the West Australian. The shoot involved an outside picture and the photographer was waiting for the right weather to avoid glare and shadows - a cloudy day with no rain. We nearly got rained on during the shoot! I did not have any props but realised that this could be required. I know now what questions to ask and to allow adequate time for the shoot.

Good luck with your report.

Cya,

Annika
