Hi Everyone,
Wow! I jumped into the deep end and I am happy to report survival. I am five days into my work experience at a junior mining company and have been assigned the role of Public Relations assistant. The company is focused on clean energy solutions and is currently lobbying the government for support and changes to current policy.
My first few days were a whirlwind, I was overloaded with information about the energy and resource industry, all the different mining processes the company is involved in and the business development plans underway. As I began to absorb the bundles of information thrown at me I found myself getting really interested and excited about an industry I otherwise would not concern myself with.
After my introduction into the company, I was given numerous tasks to work on. Firstly I was given complete control over the company’s online media strategy, which involved setting up a new Facebook Page and Twitter Account. This was very exciting as I was able to update and change the sites as I though best. It also allowed me the opportunity to network the company online and start building awareness and support from the community.
As the company was also in transition of redesigning their website, I was also given the task of updating new ‘copy’ on the website, and uploading important publications such as ASX Announcements and the website Quick Links. I soon realised that monitoring websites was not an easy task. As the company outsourced to India for the website design, it allowed for very limited internal control. Any large changes to the website design had to be requested, via email, to the outsourced company and there were a few problems communicating due to language and cultural barriers. After numerous emails being sent with different explanations of the desired changes, I learnt the best way to communicate was to email one specific task at a time and be very straight to the point - i.e. in dot form.
Finally I would like to add that the corporate culture within the company is very open and everyone ideas and opinions are valued. I found that all the ideas and opinions I put forward gained a really positive response, creating a really positive workplace environment. I personally feel motivated to step outside the box and found myself looking for new opportunities, such as seminars, expos, media channels, for the company to explore.
Hope everyone is enjoying their placement as much as I am. Stay tuned for further updates!

Hi Alex,
I found your post quite interesting in regards to your involvement in the company's Facebook Page and Twitter account. At the PRIA National Conference last year, I had a conversation with a lady who works in PR at an executive level. She basically was saying what an advantage our generation has when entering the workforce, due to our knowledge of social media. For this reason I found it interesting that your first assignment was the online media strategy. It seems the company have identified the advantages of having a younger person (sorry if I'm wrong in assuming your around the 18-25 age group!) in the office and have utilised our generation's general knowledge of social media.
Have they developed a policy for employees for the use of social media sites? I read somewhere that this has been a general trend with company's who are expanding their online activity.
All the best with your placement!
Lyndsay
