professionalism

this is going to be the month of july and yearly reviews on each colleagues are on.
and this is the period too where my company is getting very busy with annual dinners, annual promotion events, outstanding fees quotations and writing annual reports.

here came a new intern and she is from Indonesia.
i did not notice her existance as she sits at a corner when she first enter to work in the creative media team.
to be honest she did not give a good impression,
first, she comes to work late, complaining that she couldn't catch the bus sometimes as she stays far away.
second, she smokes in pantry during tea time. as, we should not smoke in an air-cond pantry and smoking is only allowed outside the office.

during lunch break some colleagues were happily sharing their appraisals and they eventually poked out this topic. professionalism.
punctuality speaks alot that a person is responsibility or anot.
it is sometimes hard to present yourselves to be professional?
and some said smoking should be avoided when meeting with sponsors and clients?
and for ladies, make-ups, dressings, perfumes speaks alot for professionalism?
to all of you,
please share me what is your experience of professionalism?
lets discuss.

to be continued.

You raise some really valid ideas in this post! Professionalism can be the make or break of snagging that major client, promotion or job so it definatly needs to be taken seriously.

I feel that being on time not only shows responsibility, but trustworthiness, reliabilty as well as giving employers the overall impression that you not only enjoy your work, but you want to be there. I am a stickler for timeliness, and therefore always set my watch 5min faster so I am never late for meetings, work etc.

As for ladies, I feel we have a much harder time than males when it comes to professional appearance. They can wear pants and a shirt- they are fine. Females have to be careful to avoid shirts that are too low cut, shirts too short, makeup that is too heavy, and perfume that can be overpowering.

Working in the city, you see so many females who are dressed like they are about to hit a club- which definatly sends off the wrong messages.

Seeing them however, shows us what NOT to do!!!!

As for your fellow internee (?)- at least you do come across as more professional, which can be a good thing!!

thank you LM,
for me, i always make myself earlier than the time expected for at least fifteen minutes, coz, i do feel 'inconfident' if i am late. i have to make sure everything is well prepared....

you know, the colleagues are now poking out the issue of ladies smoking in the public. some said it reflects to ones personality. smoking versus professionalism. what do you think?

Smoking can be a very touchy subject. Personally I do not smoke; however professionally I think it could be both a disadvantage and advantage.

Say you are meeting with a non-smoking client, and you are seen in public smoking. This may not be a big deal- but many companies and organisations back the "quit smoking" campaign- this could be your downfall. Not only that, smoke sticks to your clothing. So either you go into your meeting smelling of cigarettes- or you drown the smell with perfume- which can be overpowering, and often smell worse.

Alternatively, there could be a few advantages. Say you are dealing with a client- who smokes... smokers say that it is "social". Does this pose for the beginnings of a comfortable relationship between you and the client? Can you now have meetings over a cigarette rather than coffee??

Just something I thought, what do you think?

i dont smoke too, and yeah, for me i would prefer to sit in starbucks for a meeting with clients rather than smoking all the way in corridor... hmm.

there are few colleagues here who are smokers and normally what i see is that, they have some mints or candies with them to avoid unpleasant breath while meeting new clients. and they would be delighted if the clients offer cigarretes as, they have similar interests. thats what they said. and this is what that you refer as 'social'.

Haha, mints and deodrants seem to be the common theme with smokers.

I was thinking about your blog, and it occurred to me, every Friday at my placement we have "Casual Friday"- a day where we can wear whatever we like, jeans, tshirts etc.

I try to stick to jeans, but still a "smart" top. However some colleagues use the day to wear baggy jumpers and skate shoes.

What do you think should be worn on a "casual Friday"- 100% casual, or less?

the meaning of 'casual' on friday, for me, is just a day for us to relax, and we dont need to make an hassle to get headache while choosing the office wear with ties and dress in wardrobe.

we have that too, casual friday. but normally colleagues wear jeans and t shirts. each of us have a coat/jacket in black with the company tag on the side, that is for an 'emergency'. imagine there is a client meeting on friday and you wear mini skirts and tubes. *wink*.

thanks for your reply. i guess you really keep this blog reading.
