Life in the Oil & Gas Industry

Hi everyone,

I am completing my PR 393 placement where I am also employed Full time in the HR department in an Oil & Gas company. Public Relations is a strange study area, I have discovered as it covers so many facets of a job. It’s interesting when people ask what I’m studying and I tell them PR, their immediate answer is “what’s that got to do with HR?”

Besides the obvious common factor of the “R” for relations, HR and PR do cross each others paths quite frequently ranging from Internal (employees) and External (Potential Employees) audiences to event management, I have found that so many basic PR fundamentals have assisted me greatly in my position.

The thing I love most about my job is the task diversity I experience on a day-to-day basis. I am currently working on an a bi-weekly internal newsletter to send out to all our Australian based employees to alert them of current vacant positions, with the aim of them not only thinking of potential career paths for themselves on our other rigs, but more importantly pass on the information to their friends and family. Hand in hand with this I am also working on an external newsletter to a database we have complied from past applicants that wanted to be updated with our projects. The benefit of publishing both of these is that not only do we capture an extended audience, but it’s more importantly it’s free as it’s all via email!

Hi,

I just wanna share my thoughts about the relations on public relations and human resources (relations). Actually when i got my internship at a business and IT company, i was also placed under human resources, which at first i was thinking why am I placed in HR when my background is totally PR? Then after the internship, i realized that HR and PR compliments each other where working as PR person under HR usually takes care of the internal relations (employees) rather than more towards external key publics.

Although its like that, I still think that it is very important for us to know our employees better before we step to the external key publics (customers). It gives an insight on how we can handle employee relations in the company, which is also part of PR works.

Regards,
Dina Junaidi.
