Hi there.
I am well into my second week at PPR, and things are going really well.
I have been handed work from all different areas of the company - from compiling media databases to organising media clippings and re-typing reports. A lot of the work is just admin stuff that anyone could do, but I suppose in any business there will always be jobs that no one wants to do, but somebody has to do them!
One of the great things I've noticed about PPR is how clearly defined the organisational structure is. I previously mentioned the corporate culture here - professional but very welcoming. Everything here is so organised - there are protocols for just about everything - which I think is one of the reasons the business runs so successfully.
If you are stuck on something there will always be someone who knows what to do, or a manual you can find with instructions, or a template that has been used before. As PPR is a national company, they have tried and tested the most effective methods and therefore have a high level of consistency in everything they do.
And consistency is a very important thing in PR!
We also have a weekly staff meeting where all areas of the company come together - to hear about things that affect the group as a whole, to keep employees updated on new clients and new projects and to commend employees on their recent successes. I really admire the way PPR does this - ensuring that the employees stay motivated and feel valued.
I am learning a lot here, not just about PR but about how a business integrates all of its aspects to operate efficiently.
Until next time,
Y

Hi Yvette,
I totally agree that there needs to be consistency in working successfully! Although, I think there is a palce where protocols can get confusing. You are luck that yours are all documented for you. I have found that there are so many different protcols for a media release in the Department of Education and Training people are confused who they need to speak to first. This is also impacts on the messages that are being sent out, they are slightly changed by every person who looks at it that it is different from the original message. Maybe that is a difference between the public and private sector?
Hope you have a good placement,
Bec
Hi Yvette,
Glad that you are enjoying your placement and learning new stuff.
I totally agree that in every company or organisation there is bound to have some things that no want wants to do but still, things have to be done.
I guess, as part of interns doing placement at these companies, we are often asked to do things people don't want to do. This of course is based on my personal opinion from my previous placement and current placement. But well, everyone has to start by doing all these things when we are new.
Being consistent is definitely a must which i very much agree to your statement. Especially in media releases. The style of writing for resepctive organisation and company have to be consistent to the media as i learned that it represents the company as well as promoting an event to giving out information.
I personally feel that it is a very good thing to have meetings weekly to update everyone in the company as i realised most every different department are sometimes very detach with the other departments in the company. Of course they would have seperate meetings on their own but i think having a meeting weekly having all departments coming together would be a very good idea. What more a big corporate company.
The organisation i worked with does not have weekly events however we do have weekly Friday afternoon teas where everyone comes together and talk. We talk not just about funny personal stories but also things that are happening especially upcoming events and so fort. I think this is because we are an NGO therefore it is less formal sometimes. Which i think it is good :)
Anyway, hope you will continue enjoying your placement!
Sharon
