CSR-“this new thing?!!”

Hey!!!
I have few days left for me to complete my internship. This week I was assigned to update AIMS CSR contact list, that is, to call the different companies and asked who is responsible for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in their companies.

I was surprised by the answers from some of the companies. Big organisations have already settle to the idea of having someone responsible of their CSR program, however, some small ones referred to it as “this new thing” and some said I was out of my mind as they do not know what CSR means. Some who did not know, accepted that I explained to them about CSR and said they will talk to their employers about it, some refused to acknowledge that such a program existed.
Going through this experience, I am altogether glad that we have learn about CSR in our past module and I was able to be useful into explaining to the companies who did not know what CSR is all about.

I will thus say that with what we have been thought by Curtin, we are surely prepared to face the real world of work.

Take Care everyone!!!

Hi there,

CSR is obviously a very new and developing concept - but I do think it is becoming very important and companies should be focusing on what they are doing, for the environment and for the good of society in general.

I am really glad we learnt about CSR during our degree, as I know it will be an essential part of our future careers in PR. It does amaze me though that some of the companies you contacted didn't even acknowledge its existence!

Its also important to distinguish between CSR and "green-washing" which I know a lot of companies and trying to do.

Good luck with the rest of your placement! :)

Hi guys,

I think that both of you have brought up some really interesting points. I am working for a resources company involved in alternative energy for Australia and we have started up a new intiative called The Green Network.

My company acknowledges the need for CSR, and this new intiative is a way to support the local green community in Perth.

My company is involved in underground mining projects that have minimal impact to the environment, but because the process is misunderstood people get the wrong impression.

The issue that I think we have is where is the line between CSR and "green-washing"?

I think my company has a responsibility to be CSR but at the same time how do we not come across as "green-washing". For a resource company it is very thin line we tred, and soley depends on how people interpret what we are doing, good or bad.

Sometimes when it comes to CSR intiatives it can go either way!
