Hi Everyone,
I am currently in my final semester studying commerce at Curtin University Bentley. I commenced my work experience placement with Llama Bar in the events management and functions department, on the 14th of September.
I have entered my fourth week there, completing two full days each week. Here is a small insight on what I learnt in my first week.
My supervisor informed me that all the pricing for the Christmas function packages were in need of a complete overhaul. It was my job to essentially compile an express spreadsheet of the actual prices of the goods sold and then determine what price Llama would sell them in order to make a profit. This was incredibly lengthy as I was not quite aware of how many individual items I had to locate prices for, and determine what a suitable profit for the business would be. My work was obviously re-read and approved or altered by my supervisor once I had completed the job.
This task gave me a deeper insight into the importance of preparing budgets and dealing with the monetary costs of goods involved in events and functions. Witnessing from the inside how profit is determined was a particularly interesting exercise for myself.
Although the task itself was fairly mundane, it lead to myself asking many questions that involved how the effect finances have in an events environment, lead to particular decisions made.
Over the next few weeks I will be accompanying my supervisor, meeting with clients and potential clients in the corporate industry who intend on hosting an event at the llama bar.

Hi LM,
Firstly what a great place to do an intership! Being a small business, you would be exposed to so many aspects of the business - as seen in your post.
Finance is such an intergral part of business; without it there would be no business at all! It always interets me as well to see how much Public Relations ties in with other departments, and how much you learn in the process.
I am looking forward to hearing about your next assignment in your internship.

Hello!
I agree with Olivia's post, it does seem like an exciting place to do events management! But your experience does go to show that some parts of events mangement most certainly are arduous and mundane, but each little aspect contibutes towards the bigger picture, so sadly they have to be done properly.
Your experience also highlights how PR covers a range of abstract tasks that no one really associates with the discipline, as its not just publicity, writing up press releases, and so on.
Best wishes,
Rachel P.
