Sitting back and thinking what client to approach may sound as simple as many people may think, looking at the big outcome already measured by the positive predictions a businessman or businesswoman may have. For my personal view as a student who is always eager to learn more and understand how successful gurus of this industry do it, I got to know that it takes some few seconds to think of a client to approach next, although there are more challenges you should be willing to face to understand more on the client’s need than yours, since you already know yourself. Relating this to my practical experience, it knocked my head hard and I understood how it is more demanding to choose a client. Put your mind in to it and think about it, you choose a client to represent and work closely with them to promote for example their product and remember you also have competitors looking for the same opportunity. Will you assure me that you will call the client and win the position? This is one of the questions my company manager had put on the table and I had to answer, after he assigned me to research on the clients who may consider our service. In a few days I had to come up with a long list of clients we could possibly approach, professionally presented, as typed and with appropriate information which includes the address and contacts, preferably with the name of the person to contact. Damn! (Emphasis)
The following is one of the code I found interesting and relating to my story, Amazing;
“Many public relations practitioners count communication and strategy as the most valuable skills in their field. But in practice, one cannot put those skills to good use without a foundation of research and information gathering. It’s important to know a client’s needs, target market, and available resources in order to draw up a good PR plan. For example, before submitting a story to a magazine, you have to know its readership and editorial standards to make sure your piece will fit in. There are various types of research involved in PR, such as market research, industry research, news tracking, and competitive analysis. Each project requires different research methods, but one thing is constant: all PR projects involve research to some extent.” http://www.prfriend.com/research-in-public-relations/
To assure for a client comes after you got that full conviction, by simply putting yourself in the same situation as to that company. That is, if it has failed due to competitors, show how you can make it stand ahead, if its image has gone bad, tell how you can revive and bring trust back to normal, if it needs to build a long term brand on the product with its customers, then show how you can make this a success, etc. I can’t wait to get a chance to talk to a client on the phone, I imagine myself being nervous and stuck, and I just hope it won’t be like this. Cheers!
