PR IN GOVERNMENT CONTEXT IN BOTSWANA

Government public relations focus on the use of communication to achieve specific
goals such as nation building. In government,We posit that as a country becomes more democratic, reflection also becomes a more prominent feature of government public relations. In government,it is very vital to emphasize equal opportunity for citizens to speak and be heard, government public relations moves away from the traditional public information model and approaches a two-way symmetrical model.

This is what we have been working since last week in our 4 days communication plan workshop. Most of our strategies and tactics that we did are not for the benefit of employees or any individual but for the people of Botswana, stakeholders as well as for the iconic status of the our organization. Looking at what I have learned in this workshop I was equipped with what PR can do and cannot do; In this organization, PR stimulate debate and encourage changes in behaviour, attitudes and perceptions towards environmental issues and pollution.

Also,PR in government its role is to promote and attract foreign investment and aid. Also same as in Private companies, in government, there should be trustworthy. Trust is the key requirement foe effective communication to take place. In government if you are trusted then people will be prepared to listen to you. Also what we discussed as we were working in what PR shouldn't do was making promises that it cant do. We agreed that it is very crucial to carry out what we agreed to do as well as trying our best level to update the media on our current activities although one of the most difficult part in Botswana is that Media only turn up during crisis instead of positive coverage, which makes it difficult to civil servants to have a good working relationship with media especially commercial ones.

Currently we are working on coming up with slogan for "CLEAN UP THE WORLD" campaign which we are all involved in my team of 9 members. It has been such a good time so far and I'm looking forward for my last weeks of this internship

Bless you and best wishes.

Hi Tefo, Ali is here. Nice post and it brought something to my mind too:

You see, too often, organizations exhibit a "just trust us" mentality by announcing plans without providing reasons. And that, based on my experience simply doesn't work. Especially because governmental bodies has this tendency to underestimate youths and new generations. On the other hand new generation is more free to show some investigative spirit some times, proven especially in the ongoing current affairs. One example is the "climategate" story. You know about that nah?

So speaking in terms of "Trust" I guess there are variety of parameters that has to be considered before initiating PR planning with citizens.

I look forward to get a book on this matter.

Thanks again for bringing this up.
