Learn to be proffessional, and attentive at all times, if you have nothing to do, rather read achives concerning your company or read online international news. Your supervisor will be glad to note you are always on browsing on faceboook on your evealuation form, regardless of how she or he can smile at you. This is just a test, dont let facebook ruin your internship!
One other thing is sleeping in the office, i know the sleep is so sweet and comes in with so much force, try to drink coffee, or if they dont offer coffee in your office take a 5 minute break and walk out for fresh air, i promise you, you will come back to the office refreshed. Sleeping on your desk, shows and reflects irresponsibility. who will want to hire a sleeping rag??
On the other hand using social media in an organization can be helpful when engaging in campaigns. Facebook has been proven as one of the best social media an organization can use as it is interactive and it has many members. An average of about 200 000 people globally sign up in facebook daily. From what i have learned in Pr 300, social media reaches a masses of potential clients , it is effective and it is cost effective. So if organizations could use facebook in a rather professional way it can actually help the organizations prosper. social media has become the most effective way to reach masses of people in different countries.

What an interesting post! my supervisor is encouraging me to use online social network sites to build our organisation! Currently I am in the middle of writing a report on the ways we can use online social networking sites to communicate our events and ways people can help! As a non for profit organisation, the use of 'free' online networking sites are vital to the development of the orgainsation. I agree, browsing facebook for peronsal use is completely unprofessional. However Kellie, my supervisor has been encouraging me to explore facebook, twitter and linkedin! One of my jobs last week was to upload pictures onto facebook from a recent event and update the status!
With regards to staying awake it is hard! Time management is quite testing at times, as we dont get paid for our internship, i still need to go to my other job so my life at the moment is quite hectic! To keep energised i go for brisk walks at lunch and a good coffee is a must! However it is a moment of exhaustion but i believe the networks and expereiences that have been made possible through doing this internship outweigh the exhaustion!
At my other internship in journalism, the company finally blocked facebook because so many journos were playing games and watching videos. The irony was, it wasn't so much the loss of productivity that management was worried about, but rather the ballooning internet costs.
As for staying awake, I try to get up and walk around the office, but yes, it is hard. If I can, I sometimes take a 15 min nap in my car during lunch hour.
For tasks like folding evvelopes, it doesn't matter so much if you're drowsy, but for writing, I find it's better to take a break rather than carry on producing substandard work.
I am happy for having you Trish doing an internship the same time as for me. You are always encouraging us to be positive besides being taught what really is done in the PR field. That is what I am tempted to do and I would say 'I will see the boss when she is coming and minimize the page' because I sit opposite her. Time stolen tastes sweet.. but guys let us avoid it as it leads to destruction.
@Ashleigh, thanks for the post! actually i am impressed my post captured your attention, esp that we are in different countries! well it quiet interesting to know how u are actually using the social networks in actually are good way, i have never thought of that, your supervisor kellie is doing a great job, i think i am goin to introduce the idea to my boss.. i can use a whole day of facebooking!lol
@Sean,thnks a lot for your comment! are you serious?? drastic move there, but i guess it was for the best hey!its really hard to keep awake, sometimes my eyes become practically heavy, i cant lift them up... and you know the wonders of a 10min nap?? makes u feel u have slept for hours..
@Molly, thanks for the comment too ... i am touched to hear you saying that of me, i guess its all about encouraging each other at the end of the day, to unite and work as one.. i also learn a lot from your posts and believe you are very talented, work hard and use your talent to the max!
I agree with you Trish we should never try to Facebook just because the boss is not around. One thing that I have noticed about Facebook is that a person is never satisfied with using Facebook more especially when most of their friends are online.
I believe we should have this motive in our minds, this company is part of me.If you are a smart person come up with ways of making your comapany smart. Everything that you do which is not good affects the company. Just imagine how the company will be if all people will want to be monitored?
@janet,,,eheheheheheheheh! glad to hear from you...
well really its not advisable for us to be facebooking at work...because you get hooked and loose concentration!!!
Even though we are living in the era of new media,it seems that employees are going overboard with it.In my company, the use of social networks is banned and the websites have been blocked. In the industry it's all about productivity, and it is every employee's responsibility to strive for elimination of obstacles that harbour productivity in the workplace.
hi Trish...
I knew this must surely be yours lol!! U brought up an important issue there, work is nt like school where you sometimes finish your lessons early, go home and sleep. You can't even sleep on the desk when you are exausted lest you are caught and get into trouble. One thing we have to know though is that work brings us food on the table, if you loose your job because of sleep you will suffer for for no reason because some companies don't tolerate such they are too busy to have a sleepy employee. Also to be it doesn't show discipline as a P.R professional to sleep during working hours, if you didn't sleep well at night tell your boss to allow you to come maybe at 11 so you can rest, i believe they will understand rather than to come in and sleep.
My tip is always have coffee at your work place, i have tea in the office and i bought a mug so every morning before i do anything i drink a cup of tea to keep me warm and active, after lunch is another one, when you have your stomach full the first you want is to sleep so do the same chase away slumber with a cup of tea. As for facebook I believe that one should be done strictly during tea break or lunch hours unless its done for the benefit of the company.
enjoy your internship dear....
This is a surprisingly contentious issue.
It's not always as simple as being lazy or having a good night's sleep.
A well rested person can still feel tired in the afternoon, a holdover from when Man used to roam the plains and take naps in the middle of the day because it was too hot to hunt.
I do Brazilian jujitsu, which can be tiring after work. It's been my experience that if I can get a 15 min nap before training, I feel so much better during and after class. Even if it's only mental it makes a difference.
I have a friend who works as a Security guard, and he practically lives off energy drinks. 2-4 a night to get him through a shift, depending on how he feels. Is it healthy? Probably not. Does he have a choice? Probably not.
Using facebook, or just surfing the net for personal reasons is undoubtedly wasting time. I don't advocate a draconian policy against it; a break now and then is good. The question is where to draw the line.
But sleep and rest are different. I'm not talking about late night parties and the aftermath, I'm talking about the body's natural cycles. Everyone agrees we're all different, we all know someone who is a heavy/light sleeper, someone who is a morning/night person. We acknowledge these differences, and then insist everyone work 9-5 shifts and label them lazy when people falter.
It's the world we live in. I look forward to the day when workplace culture evolves to where it can adapt to people's physiology. But until then, I guess we have to live off coffee, energy drinks and try not to get caught snoozing.
WOW, i am amazed as to how this issue has brought about so many views, and we all reason differently. the main thing is that we should know what we came to do at work, it is toatally not facebooking, or twitting, or either sleeping. It is to work, and gain experience. Let us not loose focus. We have to impress the bosses!!
i wish you all the best..i know we are about to complete!
