I was lately given such a big task on deciding on the theme colors to use for our client, being Jack and Jill as they where developing their website. I was not only asked to that but was also asked to come up with ideas on how to change the website, what i feel should go in, and what should be eliminated. I asked my boss with such shock that is he giving me all that responsibility on me. I remember i told him i am just an intern, he then laughed so much and said you are now into the real world. I then started brainstorming and coming with all ideas i could think of, the craziest ideas that i thought where not good, where the ones that where chosen. My supervisor was quiet impressed with my thinking capability and how i can stretch my mind to think.
With all the skills I acquired from all the Pr classes especially Pr 220, Pr 300, Pr 250 I was able to blend everything i learned in the class and show it in the office. How I handled clients, keeping in mind that the client is always right. I have developed communication skills, and I can now face and talk to clients freely and more confident. Communication skills play a major role in the world of public relations. Knowledge on crisis management is also crucial as you can be able to help and give clients some hints on how to solve any of their problems they are facing. One has to be able to speak clearly and fluently especially during presentations and when addressing the public or discussing projects with clients. I am now content and feeling part of the organization.
Now anytime I come with an idea i do not hesitate to air it out, because that might be the idea that could help save my company in the future in crisis times. Guys always remember that you are more than capable, just believe in yourself, and work harder!

wow! it is so nice to hear that Trish, from all your experiences i guess now you are ready for the real job. i truly agree with you when you say we should believe on ourselves, it was once said by the great man called Napolean Hill that "Any idea, plan, or purpose may be placed in the mind through repetition of thought" so the decisions that you made for your clients are so great.
keep doing good girl!
Hey Trish....
I bet you have outdone yourself dear, and its true that when we come into the industry as interns we always esteem everything and evryone higher than ourselves which to some extent is good for humility but what we forget is that this is PR where the silliest idea can get the company back on its feet. You are right when you say your ideas can save the company from crisis, we have learnt of so many crazy tactics by Big companies and today the conquered the crisis and managed them well. We just have to learn that every PR professional can uphold the reputation of the company and make it a success. If you are timid you may just be witholding great recommendations, strategic plans to manage crisis, great ideas to run an event or even a great way to attract clients and sponsors.
We all have something to offer and in most companies we are given a chance to show our ability to think and be productive, lets make the most of that opporunity to make our companies proud. Thanks Trish for this blog I believe it will encourage everyone of us to believe in their abilities.
It is very nice to found out that your boss is impressed Trish, especially as he is supervising you. I also realized that since we are only new in the work industry, we hesitate and tell ourselves that we can't do it but our supervisors prove us wrong by approving our work to be interesting.
Keep it up gal..
Wow, I'm so happy for you Trish. Now it's time to sit down and dissolve what you have learned during the placement. I guess you are now ready to face the real world. I guess we are going to surprise our lecturers for the coming PR assignments, we have to apply what we learned during the placement. No more t-shirts, badges, stickers etc for tactics.
Hi Trish,
I have to say that your blog entry struck a chord with me. I notice myself holding back sometimes from raiseing ideas or suggestions I've had with regards to different issues the company is experiencing because I feel these decisions are too high up for me. But once I did speak up, I've also found that my ideas were appreciated and often picked up by my manager. So I advise all PR interns - even if you feel timid or unsure about some of your ideas - there's no harm in sharing them. I think you may even find that suggestions which seem like common sense and simple to us PR folk are overlooked or forgotten by managers in practice. And if we as PR professionals whose role is based on effective communication - don't communicate our ideas - what hope is there for everyone else :) Well done and good luck for the future!
