Sorry for not blogging for a while.. I actually lost internet connection towards the end of the trip, which was a real pain since I had to contact my supervisor (who is in Perth) via email!! But all is well~ And I had a plan and to-do list to help me going.
Anyway, I found something interesting while I was out and about and reading Japanese magazine and other media. This is only based on experience and without academic backing (I will do that in the next post!) but I found that young Japanese kids have no idea what PR is! I mean young as in around 18-23. I found out when I was talking with some of the locals.. They knew what marketing and advertising is but not PR! It took me a while to explain to them what I do..
Also, I found that websites and magazines gives the label "PR" for advertising! Here is an example from the old Colosoul Japan blog (we used a free Japanese blog host called Ameba)

What do you all think? Is this advertising or PR in your opinion?
Hope you all have a great week!

Hi Cintya,
It's not only young Japanese people who dont know what PR is, but Australians as well! I will even admitt that I didnt really know what PR was even when I enrolled to study it! In one of our classes we discussed whether public relations was a profession or not. The verdict was that it wasnt because it isnt recongnized by the public as offering an essential role to the community. I think this stems back to the fact that not many people know about public relations or understand it. Here at Tourism WA, while there is an individual public relations team, it falls under the marketing banner. Maybe it will take a few more years before PR is fully understood.
All the best for the remainder of your placement,
Vanessa :)
Hi Cintya,
I think it's not only in Japan that the PR profession is not recognise for what it really is. In my country, Mauritius, the Pr profession is having more and more importance in a company. Whereas a few years back, people without any qualification could apply for PR jobs. Anyone could be a PR officer.
However, todays things have change and PR officers have big responsibilities within a company.
It is a very good things for us, as there is a big demand for the PR domain on the market.
I think this website is more like advertising than PR!
Virginie.
