I was thinking I would have heaps of things to write about in regard to budget, but unfortunately not. It turns out in our sector of the government department there is no set budget because the project I'm dealing with is a lot to do with EDUCATING people on pipeline safety. However, I shall find out the limit of no limit in more detail in a few days so stay tuned...
So almost at the end of this journey. We have already written the contents of the Land Use Guideline and are working on the design layout now. I seriously suggest to my fellow peers to perhaps take up a course in graphic design at Tafe or uni. Being young around the office, I realisedmy "older" managers expected me to know how to use design softwares. Luckily for me I studied photography during my school years so I'm familiar with Photoshop and I also did a course on fashion and textile designs where I had to learn to use illustrator. These are things you aren't always told of or taught at university by your tutors and lecturers, but having that added experience really does help you a lot. For employees I suppose that cuts the cost of having to outsource a graphic designer and for you it may mean a pay rise.
I have a meeting with the communications officer and project managers on Wednesday where we will be discussing what we can and cannot include in the Land Use Guideline. I will also be educated on copyright protocols as we are wanting to use some images from the website and CNN etc. Working for a government department means we have to have certain logos, texts and formats which must be included in the LUG and I will also be briefed on that. I am really looking forward to this meeting as it marks the last stages of my purpose as an intern in the Department of Regional Development and Lands.
Before I finish I will quickly share with you what I learned today. The pipeline runs along Swan Valley, Nangara and few other places around metro area marked below on the map. It also runs along Tonkin Highway, which means if you are driving down Tonkin Hwy where the pipeline cuts across and there is an unapproved excavation taking place; turn off your ignition and run!
Happy Blogging,

Hi Suesha
I am also working in a government department and have found the information session I received in regard to what the DTWD calls the style guidelines which outlines the font type and size and even the specific size of the department logo and the position on the page very interesting.
The fact that for departments that usually aren’t very visible to the public they put a great emphasis on there brand and image.
I also have found that there is some expectation in regards to computer skills from older workers who seem to think anyone with a university degree can operate every computer program out their. It made me realise that it would be a great asset to be able to use Photoshop, illustrator and in design to make my work more effective and that bit more creative
Keep up the good work Sue
Hi Sue,
Sounds like you have had a pretty interesting time at your placement, and I'm really interested to see what else you get up to.
I agree 100% with your advice about taking a graphic design class or something similar. Lately I've been reading lots of job ads and the majority of them related to Marketing or PR want the candidates to have experience with Adobe and other design programs, which is a bit scary for someone like me who couldn't use these programs to save her life!
I will definitely be looking into a short course over the summer to add to my skills.
Good luck with the rest of your placement!
Hi Suesha,
That's lucky that you knew how to edit a photo in photo shop. I know how intimidating it can be when your boss asks you to do something and your not quite sure how to do it. I think if I was in your situation I may not have been able to do that, so I think that a tafe design course may be necessary. It's amazing how older people presume that we younger people will be able to use technology like that, when in fact I don't use twitter and I don't know how to edit a photo.
It sounds like your work experience place is really interesting and that your learning new things each day! Have you managed to finish your report yet?
Bye xx
