Last week I finished the 20 days at my internship and I have to be honest when I say I’m relieved. Although it was sad to say goodbye to the consultants, I found it rather challenging to fit in two days of (unpaid) work with my other responsibilities as well as uni and having to work another job to pay the bills (I’m sure some of you can relate to this). My original plan was to complete my internship during the 2010/2011 uni break however, like I said in my first blog, it was an opportunity no to be missed.
As mentioned in previous blogs, my main tasks consisted of research and contact database management. I can definitely say that these are two tasks I will not miss however I have learnt the great importance of each of them and the role the tasks play in strategic planning.
My most memorable and favourite tasks whilst completing my internship would have to be the tasks that allowed me to be more creative. During my time at the consultancy I helped work on presentations, create a Christmas greeting and help brainstorm fun and exciting ideas for a launch. These are definitely the type of PR tasks that appealed to me more.
This experience has helped me decide the areas of PR that I like most as well as the type of company I would like to work for once I graduate. I personally found that I would rather work in-house for a company rather than a consultancy and the reason for this being that I would rather form a relationship for the company I’m working for and continue working towards the success of one individual company as appose to working on many different projects for various companies.
Overall, I found the internship to be a challenge and with the stress of everything else in life, it was definitely hard to stay motivated at times. However, I am very happy that I have now completed my internship and although I wouldn’t necessarily want to do it again, I definitely gained a lot from it. This internship has not only opened my eyes to the world of PR but it has educated me and helped me to develop an idea of the direction I would like to head in once I graduate from uni.
Good luck to those still completing their internships and I look forward to reading your blogs.
