It is my last day today at the Town of Cambridge . Last night I attended a council meeting and to my surprise it was interesting and even humorous. The main topic on the agenda was an application by Karapana primary school to host a fortnightly farmers market at their school. However many residents opposite the school oval on Oban road (where the parking for the farmers market would be) were concerned that there would be insufficient parking available and patrons would park on their verges causing a traffic congestion. Several of these residents signed a petition against the farmers market and raised their concern at the council meeting. After over an hour of public question time and councilor's deliberation the application was refused unanimously.
This morning I had a quick chat with Human Resources Officer Dalton Ryan who offered the following advice for getting a job!
· Tailor your CV and cover letter to the job you are applying for
· Address the selection criteria and demonstrate your experience
· Address your cover letter to the right person
· For every 10 applications you send out expect 1 response so bombard your CV out there
· Word of Mouth is influential so get your face out there
great advice given the challenge that is aead of many of us!

Thanks for the info on how to put your resume out there! I think thats something everyone at this point would need to start to think about- its a little dissapointing that only 1 in 10 would write back-but at least that gives me an idea on how many I should put out there! Your placement sounded really interesting especially seeing how things were worked through and decided- a good insight that might be helpful in the future when dealing with local councils!
Hi,
I agree with your Human Resources Manager that your CV should be forwarded together with the cover letter to the job you are applying for. The CV should be very impressive, it should be in such a way that it will demonstrate how creative and determined you are. Of course the cover letter should be also impressive. Unless maybe it was an inquiry, not an advertised job thats when only 1 company out of 10 will respond. If it was an advertised job then blame it on either the cover letter or CV or even both. When called for an interview word of mouth is influential like you said, one needs to show some confidence to convince the potential employer/s that you are the one they have been looking for.
