YPP Amazing Race

Ever watched the Amazing Race on tv? Now we will be having one within Changi Airport itself, where staff volunteers will team up with students in a friendly competition of strength and wits in a race against time and each other around the airport. As I was the main coordinator for this event, I had to come up with the various stations and games for the race, as well as to coordinate the staff volunteer sign ups.

Each time we have such Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, we have to publicize the particular activity to draw staff volunteer sign ups. Besides this, our publicity has to be able to communicate to our internal staffs our company’s CSR direction. We face several difficulties in this because mainly I believe that the staffs do not see this CSR activity as a company effort, but more like a divisional effort and believe that their bosses will not support the idea of them taking Volunteerism Leave to participate in such activities during working hours. We are working on this by taking steps to get the senior management more involved in the programme, so that we can showcase management support to our CSR cause.

Coming back to the Amazing Race, the logistics were crazy as we had to do everything from scratch, besides the planning of the games and activities, but also the props and materials since we were on a tight budget for this year. (boo I hate cutting costs. :( ) Luckily, the rest of the CSR team pitched in to help, and with the help of some staff volunteers, we managed to come up with fun and yet engaging stations for the teams.

We faced some manpower shortage nearer to the date of the race as there were last minute pull outs from our staff volunteers. I knew it! Nothing ever happens peacefully for once during events like these, but I guess that’s what I like most about my job – the surprises that I get. In the end, we managed to solve the problem by getting our own division colleagues to stand in.

Overall I think the event was a huge success. (:

Anyway I guess you guys have noticed that my posts are like full of words but no pictures. It’s because I’m not allowed to expose the students’ identities to external parties. So sorry about it guys! ):

I'm always interested to see and be involved in 'racing' events, and I have organised several games too.

I agree with what you mentioned, sometimes it is hard to manage and get volunteer who are fully committed to the event.

So usually I will find more volunteers than the amount needed just in case if there are some volunteers pulled out at last minute. This is always a good 'contigency/back up plan' for me to minimise the manpower problems. :)
