Hi all,
You wouldn't usually put the two together but the movie world has joined forces with my placement company and mine giant, Rio Tinto. As i'm sure your all aware the film Red Dog has premiered and the respone, well what the critics have to say so far is all positive (trust me, I've read that many articles and reviews over the duration of my placement).
Growing up in the Pilbara Red Dog was a well known story in my neck of the woods so it was nice to see that the rest of Australia could get a little teaser into the Pilbara lifestyle and the towns that make these mining communities.
Rio Tinto provided substantial support to the film not only in cash but in-kind services as a variety of the sites were used as locations for the film. My time at Rio Tinto has allowed me to witness and par-take in the knock on effects/support for the film.
Rio Tinto held two premiers for the film both in the North West (Karratha) and in Perth were several of my fellow employees attended. Unfortunatley I was not able to attend as guests list etc were done prior to me begining my placement. Though after updating websites, building media clippings for the film and sending off invites to all fly-in fly-out (FIFO) employees in the Busselton/Bunbury region I did recieve 4 free movie tickets to the movie!! :)
Its nice to also see how it all over laps, away from Rio Tinto I work as a part-time travel consultant and only a few days ago a nice gentleman from NSW called explaining that he was a little embarrased that he and his wife had watched the film and now wished to plan a holiday to the North West of WA. He hadn't been to WA and was quite eager to visit the Red Dog Monument located in Dampier. After having a friendly chat and discussing his future holiday options it was nice to see how what the Community Investment team does positvely impact the communities.
Red Dog is just one of the happier notes I have to blog about.
Unfortunatly yesterday there was a fatality at Brockman 2 a FIFO mine located approx 60km out of Tom Price. Though I can not say much about the incident the way it is handeled behind the scenes is amazing, PR Corporate 101!! I've learnt that you must always be prompt, be respectful and make sure all your information is correct and approved, especially within the mining industry.
Until next time :)
