Making Moves

The days are moving so quickly and are often be filled to the brim with things to do. However its the challenge of doing something you've never done before that keeps me motivated. A few weeks back United way let me know of an initiative called Student United Way which only functions in the States. For the longest time United Way World Wide has tried to implement this intiative outside the States with no luck: UNTIL NOW. After learning that starting this intiaiative would mean that it would be the first of its kind outside of the States I got excited.

This led to my first international Skype conference with the leaders of the Student United Way in the United states. Having the CEO of United Way WA and the respective international leaders of our organisation on the same platform, dicussing our way forward, really energised my spirit and got me ready to work. Soon the skills and concepts i've learnt in international PR340 have become more apparent and has really helped in developing a real life concept of what it is to do PR on an international level. For example our biggest challenge so far has been in localizing an American concept to better suit an Australian audience. Such challenges from a PR perspective also led to me to understand the significance PR has in all types of working fields.

Another thing that has been exciting has been making local contacts and expanding my network. Part of the Student United Way intitiative is to have community partners whom you work with on a regular basis to impact the community. Going out and having meetings or picking up the phone with a purpose has been such an awesome experience and has given me quite the card collection (which reminds me of my Pokemon days).

Lastly i've really learnt that while in uni don't underestimate the value of learning how to work in a team. Team work has been great and some of the things i've learnt from group assignments have come in handy. Things like learning people's strengths and weaknesses as well as your own is always a good thing to develop. Also the issue of gaining confidence in others to play their part and not trying to be a hero which always leaves you overworked and stressed for nothing.

Stay tuned for more sports fans......
