THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING AND MAINTAINING MEDIA RELTIONS

Hello Guys its me again:

Jacqueline Monei
LUCT

During my internship period we hosted and handled an array of events and one such event would be the media tour to Morupule B Power Station with the Honorable Minister of Minerals Energy and Water Resources Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe .Prior to the event happening, I was delegated to send e-mails and fax media releases to various main stream media outlets. This was a special occasion as the event itself was that the country’s biggest power station currently under construction, Morupule B Power Station was said to be 92 percent complete with the first 150MW unit of the 600MW expected to be operational within the first quarter of 2012 so it was highly imperative for us to get coverage of the event. I also made calls to various news publications to confirm with them of whether they’ll be able to come or not. That’s the day that I realized the importance of keeping and maintaining strong media relations. Lots of Media outlet came to our event , almost all of the newspapers in the country came to the event both private and government owned media, the radio and television also came to cover our event. We made sure that there were welcomed to the event, and we took them for a tour while the Minister was explaining to them about the power station which is about to be launched, and after the tour we gave each and every one of them the opportunity to ask any question they want to and we also provided them with media kits in which it contained more information about the power station. Before the end of the day TVs and radio aired about the event, the late news of the day almost each and every TV and radio were talking about it, and that's the day I realized the importance of keeping and maintaining media relations. The following day almost every newspaper had us in their front page, and we had continuous calls from other media outlet asking more about this Power Station that is almost complete and we had them talking about it for at least a week.

Till next tym

XOXO

it's quite refreshing to know that Batswana youth, get the chance during their internship, to know what their course structures require in the field or in reality terms

Media relations is one of the PR strategies which has to be always kept in mind by organisations, as the media is responsible for letting the public out there know about you either bad or good.

That is why it is always advisable to always let them know well in time when you need them to cover your story like the one you had in Morupule. The media is a gatekeeper thorugh which investors, retailers and the community receives information and develop image of a company.

It brings a smile to my face when hear how media relations plays a strategic role in Corporate PR in Botswana.
