Office Gossip

its funny how when you join the working class no one ever warns you of the office politics, which is very much like high school drama, or college life, its a whole lot of men and women bombarded with issues they never saw coming or aren't quite equipped to handle without a certain level of scaring.

in my blog i will change the names of those involved in order not to bring any crisis or otherwise.

When i got in the PR department there was apparently 2 other interns already "doing their time" as they(we) would put it as an inside joke. I met one of them a girl, pretty in an aggressive, social class doesnt matter, type of way. Lets call her, Janet. She was left in charge of showing me around and at lunch she took me where all the interns from all department, usually congregate to bad mouth their bosses. Janet was a little different thoguh, al her stories tapped on a personal level. she spoke of our bosses as though she knew them from before.

Back at work, she explained to me how most of the male employers took favor in her, and she figured the more provoking she is the easier and more breezy the whole experience would be for her. Truth be told, i saw the logic in her little cliche' plan. I must admit it worked out quite well too, but sitting back and thinking back to that experience i ask myself, she may have all her self esteem intact physically, but to pull a stunt like that her self esteem mentally, must be at a disturbingly law level. Thats what i learned from Janet the intern.

A week after my first day, i met the second intern who was apparently out sick all week. Truth be told i had already decided what his attitude on work was and to have taken a whole week off work, this guy must really not care. So when i met him, you could imagine my shock when his second question was, could i borrow all your week notes. This was the question he followed after, Are you the new intern, Erick? Handing them over, it was as though my mind was made up to avoid him, only for very different reasons now. He could make me look bad, if i worked to close to him and anyone bothered to compare our work.

My lesson with this guy was a little more complicated. At work , you will meet 2 kinds of people, people who make you feel intimidated and people whose success doesn't cross your mind. Keep those whose succcess doesnt cross your mind as your friends (people who you talk to and let them tell you as much as they are comfortable to say), and your rivals even closer, they have the same goal as you, find out everything they know about everything that involves work at all times and never let them get an opportunity that you could have gotten first.

Finally, lets call her Dominique, beautiful, confident with a hint of attitude and an attractive innocence. She was definitely going to be chosen first for every opportunity, was my first thought when i saw her. Dont judge a book by its cover is what i realized, she was more interested in getting a permanenet job in the office immediately more than anything and we all watched her drive herself out of the office with her snide comments and judgement towards KPA PR practitioners.
