Today was my first day at the Glory and straight away I
realised that Public Relations isn’t strictly what I’ve always expected it to
be from studying it in a textbook. That is, the only way to really learn about
PR is to be a part of it. To be honest, I didn’t do a hell of a lot real work
today, though I’ve got to write a couple of articles tomorrow. Apart from
conducting a couple of interviews, what I did was observe for the most part. I watched
the way the Media Manager interacted with the players, how the Community
Manager interacted with the participant’s parents, etc.
I spent the afternoon at a Glory clinic for junior soccer
players in Sorrento. There were about 50 kids down there and about half as many
Glory staff/players as well as a number of parents and one Community News
photographer. The event was the responsibility of the Community Manager so I
was lucky enough to speak to him as well as a number of the players and get
there thoughts on the importance of events like these. I was surprised to hear
how much the players seemed to enjoy them, I would’ve thought they’d consider
them a bit of a burden.
One thing I realised is I’m going to have to keep myself in
check for a little while, because as I was meeting the players I couldn’t help
but think things like; “Oh crap, that’s Bas van Den Brink.” I’m going to have
to put being a Glory fan on the back foot for now.

Hi Mitchell,
How lucky that you get an internship with Perth Glory!
Its interesting how you said that PR is not what you thought it was because I am just about to finish my internship with angelhands, a not-for-profit organization and I definitely think that it was quite like what I have learnt in Curtin. But I guess it is different at different organisations as you got the chance to interact with the public for articles and such. My job at angelhands was to manage a whole campaign by myself so that was quite intense.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your intern and I look forward to reading more of your post!
Good Luck!
Deanna C.
Hi Mitchell
Deanna is right you are very lucky to be getting an internship with Perth Glory! Bet your enjoying your internship very much.
I understand what you mean when you said that PR is not what you thought it is and what we learn from university. I kind of agree what you mean because the Pr role in a working environment is completely different, now that you are doing your internship you would understand that. Writing media release and doing a media kit all has to be at the tip of your fingers, but with experience you will get the hang of doing all those PR related work. I did my internship at Colosoul a non for profit media organisaton and it requires writing media releases and also doing a media kit and what we learn in university puts in practice what we learn. But it is also vital to get hands on experience or work experience because it gives you better in-sight of how the media sector works and expectations of how the media sector will be.
I hope your enjoying your internship.

Hi Deanna,
I definitely don't mean I haven't gained some valuable tools from my time at university, far from it. Without what I've learned in my time at uni I would've been all-at-sea this semester.
I do think, however, that I personally will learn so much more from the industry then I would from a textbook. That may be because I've coasted somewhat through uni, but it just seemed like such a different world at there to me in some aspects.
Kind regards,
Mitchell
Hi Mitchell,
What an incredible opportunity you have working at the Perth Glory! I understand what you mean about being starstruck around the players though, it happened to me on occassion around my offices!
I have found the same thing, that PR is very different from the text books and assignment once you are out there getting involved. Although the skills we learnt definately prepared us better.
How much work did you do in regards to the start of the new season? That would have been a great time to be working in the A League.
I hope your internship has continued to be an incredible experience and I hope that it gives you the kick start you need for an amazing career in sport!
All the best,
Lucy Morrison
