I
experienced the usual first day jitters walking into the Baptistcare office on
the first day. I was not quite sure what to expect and honestly, I was not even
sure of my exact job scope. Thankfully my supervisor put me at ease. She
welcomed me to the team, introduced me and gave me a tour of the place. She
also explained my job scope to me – I am mainly working on the external
publication Reaching Out and on the staff newsletter that has yet to be named
as it is a new initiative. I can deal with those; writing is something I am
comfortable with.
A quarter
way through my internship, I can officially say I enjoy working for a
not-for-profit organisation. One of the reasons why I picked Baptistcare as my
placement was because I admired their mission and values and I wanted to work
for an organisation that had altruistic intentions. I suppose I was tired of
commercialism and money being the driver. This was after my summer internship
where my ex-employer told me the amount of money I earned depended on how fast
I can churn out pieces.
In the five
days at work, I have written out interview questions, transcribed previous
interviews and wrote articles on extraordinary people who may have been
allocated less in life but who strived to be where they are today. As an
organisation that is involved in aged care and disability and mental health
services, there are so many people out there whom I am learning from just by
listening to their story. I find it incredibly heartwarming. While transcribing
interviews may not be my favourite activity, I take joy in knowing this little
activity I may struggle to do at times will help in sharing their stories with
the world.
