Hi,
There are countless articles written about how students are usually uncertain about what to prepare for, with most feeling inadequate in their first jobs. Then again there are some of you that think they have it in the bag...how I don't know? haha
To be completely honestly with you, I never knew what PR was? and I never thought I would graduate with a degree in PR since I steered clear of anything related to writing. But here I am!
Now, I want to share with you what my 4 top tips are for PR interns in securing their first job! and please if you have any suggestions I want to here from you.
1. Volunteer for a non profit
My internship at The Festival has lead me to so many opportunities, some even paid. You see, such organisations are usually understaffed so there are opportunities to prove you have what it takes with more hands on, in-depth experience as opposed to volunteering are a heavily structured organisation.
In case of any lucky chances keep your work up to date in a portfolio and make sure to bring a hard copy to each of your interviews too. Include a letter of reference if you have it, make sure this highlights your strengths. If you don't have any real samples use the ones from class.
Many employers now use social media sites like LinkedIn to look for potential hires. Be sure to have an updated account and make good use of sites like Twitter and Facebook. Be seen in the Social Media world, the more people see your name the more professional you look, make sure local journalists are your friends too.
4. Network, network, network
Working in Public Relations is all about who you know. As a recent grad, you aren’t likely to have many connections, but even in this position, stay in touch with your teachers and classmates, and go to networking events. Plus never burn bridges because Perth and PR is small.

5. Find your niche
Be different and make your self exclusive, be passionate and do what you LOVE! Attend seminars and angle yourself to be a competitive leader in you field.

Hi Chebi,
Thank you for sharing some fantastic tips for us soon-to-be job hunters!
I can definitely second your tip on networking. Public relations success depends largely on who you know and the relationships that you develop in industry - not only to secure a job, but also to successfully achieve media coverage. This was one of my biggest revelations during my internship - great media relationships go a long way in PR.
I will out your tips into motion and fingers crossed, secure a great job in public relations.
All the best,
Lou
