Proud Intern

The event After School Project: Step by Step "Let us Preserve, Let us Give" was very successful. The only words to describe my feelings at the end of the event was relieved and proud. I am very happy that event went according as planned.

It is just an amazing feeling to be able to organised my own event in the company, especially being an intern. The trust that my manager had with us (other interns) was indescribable as she allowed us to take matters in our own hands.

A day before the event, myself and my colleagues alongside with the security guards arrived at the venue (Piasau Boat Club) to make sure the logistics and decorations were done in proper manner. The display board that I made was transported to the venue with the help of the security guards. As our office lies on the 5th floor, and the size of the display board being larger than the lift, we had to carry it down the stairs! Special thanks to Sarah Adiba (intern) who helps with this hard labour. We also had to hand out t shirts of the event to the children from different institutes. The children were very happy to receive their very own After School Project: Step by Step t shirt.

On the day of the event, the children from Kampung Wireless, Rumah Amal Anak Kesayangan Kami and also Kompleks Hamidah Yakub arrived by 7.30am, eagerly waiting for the event to start. We first had a speech by our manager, followed by the walk around Piasau Nature Reserve (to understand the history behind fighting for the reserve and reasons for preserving the reserve), Malaysian Nature Society's exhibition house and lastly, educational session by Zero Strays Miri and a pledge to love and care for animals using hand prints on a cloth.

I have learnt tremendously from organizing this event especially writing press releases, press advisory, making connections with the people of media. To me, it was important to follow up with the journalist regarding my event especially on the day of the event to cover our news. Some of the reporters have forgotten about the event but was happy to drop by once they were reminded. It delighted me to see our news being carried out in 7 media outlets (Borneo Post, Utusan Borneo, Sarawak Tribune, Utusan Sarawak, United Daily, See Hua Daily News and Sin Chew Daily News) as this shows the newsworthiness of the event.

Media clipping is another thing we had to do. Though I dislike purchasing newspapers for the media clipping (as I could not find them all in one place and sometimes it required 3 to 4 different place to get all the newspapers from all media outlets), it excites me to have found our news being carried out. It is such a wonderful feeling.

Things that I have learnt from organizing this event:
- Be organized
- Be on time
- Make note of important things to do in your diary
- Appointments are not to be missed
- Early planning is important to ensure the success of the event
- Knowing people helps ease the job
- Quotations for expenses are to be asked or done early
- Event flow are to be planned early
- Media releases for pre and after event are to be drafted early
- Be passionate about what you do!

I have attached a few pictures of the event below, please enjoy:

Hi Sterwina,

Wow a very proud moment indeed!

The satisfaction you get when working with children is amazing isn’t it?

It’s great that everything went according to plan and that you learnt so much from just one event.

Definitely an experience you wont forget.

Loved the pictures at the end! Feels like I’m right there with you ☺

Hey there, gorgeous! It has indeed been a wonderful experience for us at Interhill, Sterwina. I sincerely admire your dedication and efficient time management skills as this is not one of my strongest abilities. Besides, the children were extremely cooperative and enjoyed the nature walk very much! I was in one of the groups and most of them were curious about the flora and fauna in the nature reserve, so some of the volunteers including myself got the chance to interact and educationally engage with them. Not to forget, I emceed that day! Thank you for the fun, fruitful day. I hope that we can get together and organize something similar in the future, we could include many more creative ideas! Congratulations on such a successful event and good luck with your future endeavors. I hope you're having a fantastic experience in Perth, can't wait to see you soon, love!

Hi there,

What an experience you had.

Love the way the whole event panned out and the way the kids get to enjoy themselves while learning.

This in one experience you don't come across frequently.

Also, love the pictures included.
