Don't be afraid of red

Edits can be the hardest hit to your confidence when on your internship.

Every piece of work I did for my supervisor came back to me covered in red. Each time I thought I had nailed a brief it turned out I was still a long way off the mark.

This was for a number of reasons, but the point is I got used to getting feedback. Plus the more I worked, the less red came back to me.

It's just a matter of polishing your work as much as you can and taking on board the changes when they arrive. Interns are so inexperienced, its okay to make mistakes.

By the end of my internship I had my supervisors in stitches with a cheeky article I wrote, which they loved.

Embrace the red pen. It'll make you a better writer.

Glad to hear that you "embraced the red pen," Thomas. My experience is very similar! I study PR & Journalism, so I am quite familiar with receiving feedback, however, on my first day I was pretty shocked that a majority of my work was red! As you said it's important to take on board the edits and that interns are inexperienced, so it's understandable.

After I got used to the organisations writing style, focused more on the target audience and talked through my work with my supervisor, I was more confident and received less edits.
I would definitely recommend that everyone out there beginning their placement should take on your positive approach to feedback as I also believe that it is vital to improving your writing.

Hope you enjoyed your internship Thomas :)
