Firstly, I loved setting up the event. I have discovered that I am a little bit of a control freak so being the one who is in control of how the event looks is quite rewarding!! I am beginning to appreciate how much hard work is put into organising events and how many people all need to stay connected for everyone to be on the same page.
The training itself gave me such an excellent insight into employee attitudes. I'd always thought that a company intranet for Perth-based employees would be a great idea as it would help to improve the internal environment of Mesh. The training session definitely cemented the fact that this needed to happen!
The aim of this training session was to inform staff on the workings of the new KitchenAid machine and to explain their marketing processes and what they would want from employees coming up to the Christmas period. I felt like too much time of this session was taken up by disgruntled employees airing their problems that they had waited the whole 6 months to resolve. A case study I remembered from class, where big organisations dedicate a certain amount of time on social media for customers to ask them questions came to mind. I thought 'wouldn't it be a great idea to have a dedicated Q and A session on Mesh's intranet where they could ask these questions or even have the contribution from other employees'. Mesh employees in Perth need to feel connected!
I am now working on the sections to include on this Intranet. The ones I have thought up so far are:
- An announcements section to give up to date information when a new product etc is announced or when
- A Q and A section that at particular times can be manned by a Nespresso representative. At other
- A documents section where all documents can be kept and accessed from one portal instead of trying to look back through various emails.
This is just a starting point but I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions for what I could include?
Thank you!

The Public Transport Authority has a very strong internal communications network, with an intranet that any employee can utilise.
The intranet was particularly useful to me as a new team member because the intranet had information on each division of the agency and the relevant staff (including photos!). It also had organisational updates and notices as well as a staff announcement forum. I found it interesting reading about what other divisions had been achieving in the short time I was there.
Valuing internal communications is so crucial as it provides a definite sense of organisational unity and increases operational efficiencies. It develops a strong organisational culture.

Thanks Thomas! This is all so helpful. You've put the aim of having an organisational intranet into such a clear and persuasive statement. I am definitely going to be using this in my recommendations and rationale for my report. Thanks very much for your insight and sharing your experiences of using your placement's intranet.
