The end of my internship... and the start of my new job!

Hi guys,

This is my fifth and final blog post. I'd like to think this is more of an overall reflection of my twenty days of placement overall.

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, my internship came to an end last week. Twenty days spread over 5 months was a significant, challenging, but very valuable experience for me. I believe the PR internship unit has probably been the most valuable unit I have undertaken during my undergraduate degree and would recommend it highly to all future PR students.

Here are some of the most significant efforts I have contributed to my PR placement:

  • Assisting in and being part of the development of 5 events facilitated by the City of Swan with the help of skills and techniques learnt throughout my PR degree.
  • Writing up social media content for these events and more.
  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders of the department.
  • Updating and expanding the departments extensive and detailed media list.
  • Creating a social media content schedule to be followed by the PR and marketing department for 2016.

I believe my placement has also provided me with some amazing things too!

  • I have developed my skills in communication
  • I have experienced working in a real PR office environment
  • I have observed real issues-management and gained knowledge from the experience
  • I have developed knowledge in marketing, in the WA tourism sector and in events management
  • Finally, I have been offered a paid job in the PR department as a result of the valuable work I have done so far!!

I am so excited to begin my job at the City of Swan. I cannot wait to learn more about the PR industry and build my CV thanks to this amazing opportunity!

Question: What has been the most valuable experience of your PR placement?

Thank you to those of you who have engaged in my blog posts so far. I wish you all the best of luck in your internships!

Hi Greta,

Congratulations on being offered a job! That's fantastic news!

I also recently was offered a job where I am interning and it's such a fantastic feeling to know that your hard work has been worth it. I feel like the internship definitely gives us a great start and we are one step ahead compared to other graduates who may not have had any experience.

My most valuable experience has been similar to yours - to be able to develop my communication skills and have confidence in myself and what I'm pitching. Plus, being part of the general day-to-day office environment of a PR consultancy has been invaluable experience that has prepared me for the real world.

All the best with your new job!

Hi Steph,

Well done on getting a job!!! It is such a great feeling, isn't it. It has really confirmed for me the value of this unit. And I agree with you, its definitely provided us with an advantage over other graduates who may not have undertaken a unit like this.

All the best with your new job, too!

Congratulations Greta and Steph! You both must have done a fantastic job in your placements to secure a job, so well done.

I have not been offered a job, but definitely feel that the experience I have gained from interning has been invaluable. In response to your question, the most valuable experience I have gained has been being involved in the development of social media content plans and using the online tools to schedule the posts I have planned. I was unaware of the number of tools that were availble until being shown during my internship. It has made me curious and driven to learn more about the digital communications side of PR. I don't think we will ever stop learning about new ways of thinking and communicating, especially with the rapid pace that new technologies are being introduced.

Good luck in your new jobs!

Hi there Greta!

Congratulations on landing the job! It really is the dream come true, isn't it? I really hope I too can be as lucky and be offered a position near the end of my internship period.

Doing the internship unit has made a world of a difference in how I saw PR practice because it took what we studied in class and made it real by forcing us to apply our skills to real world situations. So even if I do not land a position at the firm I am working with I am still very grateful for the experience.

Once again, congratulations and good luck!

Hi Greta!

Again - congratulations on the job offer! I hope that you continue to find this opportunity a chance to learn more and become a highly competent practitioner!

This experience has given me an insight into the role of public relations and I now know what to search for while applying for positions. I really think working for the Government will be interesting and I hope I can use my internship experience as a competitive edge over other graduates!

Good luck with everything!
