Getting The Chinese New Year Spirit On

Greetings from Miri Marriott Resort & Spa! Chinese New Year is around the corner and in what other way should we spread the festive excitement among the associates and withe the guests? Showering the area with lanterns and 'red-ness'. I was given the opportunity to assist in decorating Miri Marriott in conjunction with the soon-to-come Chinese New Year. Even before we proceeded with the decor, it took quite an amount of discussions and plannings between my associates in terms of getting the budget to buy the materials needed, listing down the types of materials and decorations needed, setting the time and day to buy and decorate, fixing a time for the transport with the operations department, and sketching the plan for the decorations. I personally was not involve in the plannings and discussion but I am grateful for the opportunity to be present and learn from the way my associates did their pre-plannings, and executing the plan.

Almost entering 2 months of being an intern in a hospitality industry, my eyes are opened to see Public Relations as so much more than just working with journalists, community events, or even any media relations efforts. In this ever growing world, the strategies and tactics to reach the target audience has expanded beyond reach. There is just limitless ways and out-of-the-box ideas and creativity to achieve the PR goals and objectives. One of the example is the Chinese New Year decoration tactic in my placement. Luciani (n.d) mentioned that, " Public Relations is not just publicity, working with journalists, or community events. It is about building relationships with the bottom line to a hotel's balance sheet - its customers." I cannot agree more. Plus, Public Relations at the end of the day all goes back to building relationships and connecting with the audience both small and large audience. Either way, an effective PR effort will always benefit any property.

Below are several photos I took to show you the decorations done.

Hey Ivy, I am glad to hear that you are able to take part in the Chinese New Year decoration during your placement at Miri Marriott Resort & Spa. I am sure that you have learnt a lot throughout the process when you are working with your associates. I would say that it is not easy to carry out a plan after I have read your blog. Every single detail is very important and we should take note on it. I totally agree with the point that you mentioned which was "PR is not just publicity, working with journalists or community events. It is about building relationship with the customers." Nowadays, it is important to build good and close relationship with the stakeholders especially the community. As an hospitality industry, it is essential to provide a good impression to the community. For example, the Chinese New Year decoration at the lobby will make the customers feel warm and welcomed. Great post and keep it up Ivy! :)
