“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
I agree with my dear friend, Gandhi, because truly I testify that I really get to know myself more when I learn to be selfless and learn to serve the people around me. Now imagine companies, corporations, or industries whom stands firm in their belief of putting people first, staffs and employees whom not only provide selfless and wholehearted service to the guests, customers, clients, or visitors; but also teach each other to serve with all their hearts. That makes a lot of difference not only for the company but to the community around them.
Being a part of the associates in Miri Marriot Resort & Spa, I have been greatly affected by the "Spirit To Serve" from my fellow associates. I have been blessed to be able to take part in this selfless movement through the Christmas Wish Tree Project 2015.
Just last week, a team of associates including myself, the HODs (Head of Department), and our General Manager, Mr. Marc Cosyns, went to SK Pujut Corner, MRCS (Miri Red Crescent Sunflower Centre), and the General hospital to give out the presents that have been sponsored by the guests and Miri Marriott itself to the children. Before the official giving, the project took the whole of December 2015 to gather all the gifts to sponsor the children.

Description to the Christmas Wish Tree Project |
So after a whole month of collecting the gifts and donations, entering data, countless checking to ensure that no children is left without a gift, wrapping the unwrapped gifts, dividing it into three different areas (Sk Pujut Corner, General Hospital, and MRCS), and finally packing it all up, the gifts were ready to bring joy to the children. We first head to SK Pujut Corner, followed by MRCS, and finally the children's ward in the General Hospital.

The "Spirit To Serve" movement is Marriott's Global Community Initiatives. It is one of the initiative that Marriott stands upon to serve the community because one of Marriott core values is putting people first. the word SERVE stands for S (Shelter and Food - by addressing housing and hunger needs including in times of disaster), E (Environment - working towards a greener, healthier planet), R(Readiness for Hotel Careers - educating and training the next generation), V(Vitality of Children - aiding sick and impoverished children), and E (Embracing Diversity and Disabilities - providing opportunities, especially through the workplace).
I've learned that proper planning must be done in order to have a smooth and successful project. Though in the surface this project may look simple and easy but behind the scenes, there was a lot of work to be done, much research to conduct in terms of collecting the data of the children we wanted to sponsor, ways to promote the project, ways to make the project look fresh (because the project have been organised for several years), and the medium to deliver the message (promoting the project).
My placement in Miri Marriott Resort & Spa really opened by my eyes to see the other side of the hospitality industry which goes way beyond just the company or corporation but also to the community around them. Thus I came to understand that the staff and employees also represent the image of the company (as taught in previous Public Relations units) and not only the logo or the company itself. It is important to have everyone (the employees, staffs, managers, and the company as a whole) to run with the same heart and spirit.
“You are what you do, not what you say you'll do.”
