Hey everyone!
Officially nearing the end of my time at Magnetize, it’s
been one hell of an experience so far and I’m feeling very grateful that as
students we are forced into doing this kind of internship unit. This week I
want to talk about my experience with event planning. At Magnetize event
planning and consultancy is a service that they are often contacted for as they
offer small and large-scale events. During my time there I’ve gotten to
part-take in the planning stages of two events which has showed me a lot about
the time and effort that goes in the behind scenes.
Both events I’ve had the opportunity to work on have been
fund raising events for local charities. With these kinds of events it was key
to secure sponsors in order to keep costs low and to be able to donate as much
money to the representative charities as possible. I was tasked with creating a
database in which local organisations to contact in regards to sponsorship. The
databases contained over 150 local businesses with key details such as the
businesses name, best person of contact, email address, contact number and
location. Once having compiled the database it was then time to contact each of
the businesses individually to enquire as to whether they would be interested
in helping out. This was done over the course of a week with a follow up phone
call.
The next stages I was involved in included the organisation
of a list of event staff contacts, an event run sheet and a general timeline
for the event to take place. This particular stage reminded me of one of our
earlier public relations units, where we had to do a brief event plan. It was
really great to use skills that I had initially learnt almost two years ago and
put them into practice. I found this
part of my experience to be the most useful in regards to the understanding of
how events actually work.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the events come
together but unfortunately it might happened after my Internship has been
completed. Either way I’ll keep you all posted.
Thanks for reading!

Hello!
I had the chance to participate in planning an event as well during my internship.
It was a great experience as all the theories learnt in my events and PR classes were implemented. It is true that there is a huge difference when applying what you have learnt, it does not always result as expected, however this is what makes you grow and learn further and gain experience which will surely help us in the future.
With the increasingly global nature of business, the demand for event managers will rise dramatically on the job market and we can be part of it :P
Cheers and wish you all the best!
Your internship seems to have been extremely valuable. What a great experience to put yourself out there and have to communicate with so many companies asking for their support. To me, that sounds quite daunting initially. But by the sounds, you completed the task with confidence.
Whilst i never had the opportunity to plan an event throughout my internship, I did include it as one of my recommendations to the company. To my delight, it will potentially come to fruition in July in which case I'll be sure to be in attendance.
It's great that you're staying at your internship to see your project reach completion.
