PR in Perth.... no make it life in Perth!

Since day one at uni we have been encouraged to network network network!
Join associations, go to events etc... they tell us. Well I think they are right! Especially due to the nature of business in small, little isolated Perth.

First week of my placement at Diabetes WA I discovered that one of the health promotions officers (that I was writing media releases for) was a girl I went to primary school with. Also one of the journalists we were contacted by was an old family friend. Prior to the placement I had no idea that my paths would cross with these people and it's got me thinking..... is every person we meet whether in life, socially, at uni or on a work experience placement going to have an impact some how on my career in Public relations. More so is every relationship whether friendship, collegue or aquaintence a potential stakeholder in my future career?
Should I have started a little black book of contacts/sources from as way back as primary school? Would this have made my job hunt easier?

So this brings me to public relations in Perth. Is getting a job in Perth going to be as easy (or hard) as who you know? I'd like to hope my skills and experience is more important. What do you think?

Lastly this whole thought process has made me think about the importance of the impression I've left at Diabetes WA. With my appraisal pending, I feel confident now that the people I've met, worked with, and built relationships with on prac will be handy the start of my "little black book" of contacts in my public relations career in Perth
