RESEARCH…..

On my first post, I integrated the brief summary of my schedule, and I am now delighted to say I am getting there with my schedule. A week ago I was given a research on Medical Universities which are the competitors for our Client X. I was given several columns to research on which I would not say for the privacy of the Medical Colleges and Universities.
I researched meticulously and thought I had done the work infallible only to find out countless mistakes. Firstly I did not understand some of the columns given but I inquired about them. The explanation and instructions were well given and started the work immediately. Research is not a simple thing, it requires time and effort, and you would think you have researched well only to be surprised when your work is returned for corrections. My work was returned with some few cells colored yellow to show not well done; I had to correct the mistakes and send it again to my supervisor who is patient. I did the research for the whole week everyday there was a correction I must do. The brighter thing I did is I added some columns which I thought might be valuable to the client and it was approved. Since I could not find all the requisite information, I had to be intelligent here, I made some calls to the given Universities and medical Colleges pretending to be a student who wants to enroll in their University, in this way I asked all the questions which were relevant to the columns left. There came a problem when I was asked some questions which I had no answers to, I had to refer back again to the columns for me to answer the questions. Some spoke Malay language to me, but I was patient enough to let them know that I do not speak Malay. Everything went well when I was done with the columns. On the day of my submission, my supervisor told me some other information were wrong, I gave it a second try by calling universities again, only to find out that the other University I called gave me wrong information because at first they asked me whether I am Malay or foreigner. On my fourth day I tried it again and submitted it on the fifth day and was finally approved.I had a hard time trying to research on this particular topic because of no knowledge on medical subject.

I also must admit that research is rather quite a tougher task to dwell upon. My experience in a Public Relations Consultancy is that there will always be different clients. Different clients deal with different tasks therefore they have a different market and are in a different industry and require different researches. So i have come to realize that a thorough research is what we PR agents should live by day by day.

I compare this with being a student. A lot of different topics topics are always given out for us to write/discuss about, so this also becomes a matter of thorough research before anything else can be carried out. So the various topics that we normally work upon go hand in hand with the various clients that we work with in PR Firms.

It is a good thing that you decided to write about it because it is the one thing that PR agents live by and we should never grow weary of it. Besides resources to do it are not as scarce as they used to be in the past. Material are all over such as flyers, books, leaflets, brochures and thanks to the mother of all research strategies (Internet) which makes information available by a click action.

Hello Neo!!
Thank you for the comment. As students we never take research seriously in most cases but I am contented I was exposed to research more than anything else, and my work will be returned for further research which sometimes took some days or a full week to be done. As a Public Relations Intern, I have learned that time can give you appropriate results because the more you take your time the more your work becomes Eye-catching and acceptable.

I used to use Internet as the source of research only and thought it has accurate results or answers but as you say leaflets, brochures and flyer's which we never find at school were also useful to me during the hard time of my research.

For research to be perfect, it should be given time and effort which at the end gives you perfect work.

Good luck on your report writing.

Hi Tiny, i went through your post and felt like laughing, not that is funny but this is what i also went through now to realize that i was not alone. Research is not that easy, but when you are given work to research on, you will be confident that you can finish it in time because research you do it alone and for that you feel comfortable. To come up with a good research you have to go on different sources, and consultation with your assistant is also important since you don't want to waste time doing the wrong thing and screwed by your boss.

I remember being assigned to do a research during my first week at work on particular clients, and guess what, it took me the whole week because i didn't come up with the proper research until i focused and put much effort to come with a clear research and had to present it and reason for every point i give. Although at school almost every assignments requires research, we still have to consider the proper way of doing research. At work is not about submission, but you get encountered for your research since it has to bring reality and produce relevant results.
