Kenya Ports Authority of Mombasa is the gateway to East and Central Africa, and is one of the busiest Ports along the East African coastline. The Port provides direct connectivity to over 80 Ports worldwide and is linked to a vast hinterland comprising Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Northern Tanzania, Southern Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia by road.A railway line also runs from the Port to Uganda and Tanzania. The port is equipped to handle a wide range of cargoes including dry bulks such as grain, fertilizers, cement and soda ash and liquid bulks such as crude oil and oil products as well as bagged products (coffee, tea, sugar, etc) break-bulk (iron and steel, timber),motor vehicles, machinery – and containerized cargo.
During the internship, K.P.A was going through an overload crisis and this was a great time to be in office as the P.R firm had a lot on their plates. they may not have had much time for the interns though watching and helping out around was great experience and gave a slight overview of what a hectic week in the office would look like.
New charges and tariffs had to be implemented to reduce the overcrowding in the ports that was leading to loss of cargo and other equally unfortunate catastrophes. the crisis was handled in a quick and effective way by clearly stating that the ports will hence forth increase charges on port storage as well as disposed any unclaimed cargo within a certain time period, which forced those involved to solve the matter promptly.
First week of my internship was an exhilarating experience, a little intimidating and confusing as to apply what methods i learned in class where but sooner or later, the work becomes more loading than difficult. found myself staying overtime on my first week. not sure if all your first weeks were as eventful but i do hope you enjoyed your internship.
